Comedian Richard Jeni Dies of Apparent Suicide

Monday, March 12, 2007

LOS ANGELES —  Richard Jeni, a standup comedian who played to sold-out crowds, was a regular on the “Tonight Show” and appeared in movies, died of a gunshot wound in an apparent suicide, police said Sunday.

Police found the 49-year-old comedian alive but gravely injured in a West Hollywood home when they responded to a call Saturday morning from Jeni’s girlfriend, Los Angeles Police Officer Norma Eisenman said.

Eisenman said the caller told police: “My boyfriend shot himself in the face.”

Jeni died at a nearby hospital.

Eisenman said suicide had not been officially confirmed and the investigation was continuing. An autopsy on Jeni would be done Monday, said Lt. Fred Corral from the investigation division of the coroner’s office.

Jeni regularly toured the country with a standup act and had starred in several HBO comedy specials, most recently “A Big Steaming Pile of Me” during the 2005-06 season.

Another HBO special, “Platypus Man,” won a Cable ACE award for best standup comedy special, and formed the basis for his UPN sitcom of the same name, which ran for one season.

Jeni’s movie credits included “The Mask,” in which he played Jim Carrey’s best friend, “The Aristocrats,” “National Lampoon’s Dad’s Week Off,” and “An Alan Smithee Film: Burn, Hollywood, Burn.”

He had guest appearances in the TV shows “Everybody Hates Chris,” “Married: With Children,” and updated versions of the game shows “Hollywood Squares” and “Match Game.”

Frazer Smith, standup comedian who often opened for Jeni and the emcee at the Ice House, where Jeni often performed, said young comedians looked up to him.

“He was probably one of the best standup comedians in the last 50 years,” said Smith. “He had tons and tons of material. He was looked up to by all the young comedians, a total pro.”

The Brooklyn-born comic first received national attention in 1990 with the Showtime special “Richard Jeni: Boy From New York City.” Two years later, his “Crazy From the Heat” special attracted the highest ratings in Showtime’s history.

Jeni became a frequent guest on “The Tonight Show” during Johnny Carson’s reign and continued to appear after Jay Leno took over as host.

He also wrote comic material for the 2005 Academy Awards, which was hosted by his friend Chris Rock.

SPEAKER OF THE FLOP: PELOSI SELLS 2,737 COPIES OF BOOK
Thu Aug 07 2008 08:11:48 ET

The most powerful woman in the history of American politics is suffering a humiliating defeat at the nation's bookstores, sales figures show.

In her first week at market, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi sold just 2,737 copies of her book KNOW YOUR POWER, according to NIELSEN BOOKSCAN.

The DOUBLEDAY release was launched with a full media push, featuring high profile interviews on TODAYTHEVIEWTHISWEEK.

"I wrote the book in response to people asking me what it was like to go from housewife to House Speaker and for advice as to how young people, especially women, could balance family and career," Pelosi told the WASHINGTON POST.

Pelosi's sales debacle [#41 on the Non-Fiction Chart] is dramatically overshadowed by the first high profile anti-Obama book, OBAMA NATION, which debuts at #1 on both the BOOKSCAN and the NEW YORK TIMES Bestseller List, with 21,466 copies moved, industry insiders tell DRUDGE.

"The speaker was pre-occupied with house business last week," a source close to Pelosi explained Thursday morning. "She has now turned her focus to promoting this extraordinary book... doing local signings and speeches. I think we'll see an uptick."

Anti-Obama Bloggers Say They Were Silenced

Election 2008

By ANNA PHILLIPSSpecial to the Sun | August 5, 2008

Web loggers who are campaigning against Senator Obama‘s presidential run are accusing Google and Obama supporters of silencing them after their Web logs were marked as spam and their accounts temporarily frozen.

On Thursday, hours after publishing a post about an online petition demanding that Mr. Obama publicly produce his birth certificate, an associate professor of business administration at Brooklyn College, Mitchell Langbert, found that he could no longer access his Web log.

Google’s Blogger hosting service had suspended “Mitchell Langbert’s Blog,” which Mr. Langbert describes as “two-thirds academic stuff I’m working on and one-third politics,” until it could verify the Web log was not a “spam blog,” or a site designed solely to increase the page views of associated Web sites.

A day later Google lifted the block on the account, but the incident and earlier Web log freezes in late June have led Mr. Langbert and other anti-Obama bloggers to accuse the Illinois senator’s supporters of intentionally identifying their blog addresses to Google as spam blogs. They also say the company has reflexively suspended the sites.

“These tech-savvy smart alecks have figured out that if you report a blog you don’t like, you can do some damage to a person,” Mr. Langbert said.

A spokesman for Google, Adam Kovacevich, said in a statement that an overzealous antispam filter was responsible for the blocks.

“We believe this was caused by mass spam e-mails mentioning the ‘Just Say No Deal’ network of blogs, which in turn caused our system to classify the blog addresses mentioned in the e-mails as spam,” he said. “We have restored posting rights to the affected blogs, and it is very important to us that Blogger remain a tool for political debate and free expression.”

Several of the blogs that were blocked, including hillaryorbust.com and comealongway.blogspot.com, are part of the “Just Say No Deal” network of anti-Obama blogs. But Mr. Langbert’s blog is not, leading him to conclude that Obama supporters had targeted him.

On her right-leaning blog “Atlas Shrugs,” Pamela Geller keeps a list of blogs that Google has temporarily blocked. “The blockings do come in waves,” she said. “The last wave was this past week, and now it got very quiet.”

Some writers have had their blogs unblocked, while others have moved them to WordPress, a rival blog host.

“I don’t think” Google has “malicious intentions at all, it’s just that spammers can literally overrun a service if you’re not careful, so their defenses have become overzealous,” a spokesman for WordPress, Matthew Mullenweg, said in an e-mail.

“We always have human review before turning off an active blog,” he said. “People invest so much time into their blogs, to treat it with anything less than the utmost respect is criminal.”

Man calls 911 after Subway left sauce off sandwich
Aug 4 03:00 PM US/Eastern

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) – Jacksonville police say Reginald Peterson needs to learn that 911 is not the appropriate place to complain that Subway left the sauce off a spicy Italian sandwich.

Police said the 42-year-old man dialed 911 twice last week so he could have his sub made correctly. The second call was to complain that officers weren’t arriving fast enough.

Subway workers told police Peterson became belligerent and yelled when they were fixing his order. They locked him out of the store after he left to call police.

When officers arrived, they tried to calm Peterson and explain the proper use of 911. Those efforts failed, and he was arrested on a charge of making false 911 calls.

Peterson did not have a listed phone number.

Facing questions, Edwards evades reporters

It was only three weeks ago that John Edwards was fielding media questions on his chances of filling the Democratic Party’s vice presidential slot on Barack Obama’s ticket or a potential Cabinet position in an Obama administration.

On Wednesday, however, the former U.S. senator and 2004 vice presidential nominee was eager to duck the press when the questions took a tabloid turn.

About a dozen reporters and photojournalists attended a speech Edwards gave to an AARP Foundation symposium on poverty and aging in Washington. Afterward, he avoided most of the waiting reporters, at least some of whom wanted to question him about recent reports in the National Enquirer that alleged an inappropriate relationship with a former campaign videographer.

Citing unnamed sources, the Enquirer published a story in October claiming that Edwards was having an affair with a woman who filmed a series of campaign videos. The story resurfaced last week in the online version of the Enquirer, which claimed that Edwards had visited the woman and their “love child” July 21 at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, Calif.

In October, the woman posted an online statement denying the first story. In December, an Edwards campaign worker claimed to be the father of the woman’s then-unborn child.

On Wednesday, Edwards apparently ducked out a side area used by the kitchen staff in the fourth-floor ballroom of Washington’s historic Hotel Monaco. Edwards emerged from a lower-level handicap ramp near the rear of the hotel with two men. When approached by a Charlotte Observer reporter, Edwards said, “Can’t do it now, I’m sorry” and quickly walked past.

Asked what he was doing at the Beverly Hilton last week, Edwards said “sorry” and got into a waiting car with the other men.

No photographs or video of the alleged California hotel incident have been released by the Enquirer, which described in its online story its reporters’ attempts to chase down Edwards. The tabloid reported he hid in a restroom to elude them.

The story has prompted some buzzing in the blogosphere but little public response from Edwards. At a July 23 speech in Houston, Edwards responded to a reporter’s question about the Enquirer story by referring to it as “tabloid trash.”

Investigation of GOP group sought

A campaign finance group wants an investigation of the Republican Governors Association.

Democracy North Carolina filed a complaint Wednesday with the State Board of Elections arguing that the method the national GOP group is using to raise money is unlawful.

According to campaign finance reports, the RGA’s North Carolina 2008 Political Action Committee has raised nearly $390,000 to assist the campaign of Republican nominee Pat McCrory.

Democracy North Carolina head Bob Hall says the association raised money from out-of-state donors who aren’t being told the money is going to North Carolina. He argues that state law doesn’t allow that.

Elections Director Gary Bartlett said that the board will investigate the complaint.

New spokesman for Perdue

Beverly Perdue has a new spokesman.

The Democratic gubernatorial nominee announced that she has hired Tim Crowley, who previously served a similar function for her at the lieutenant governor’s office.

Crowley is a former journalist who was host of “Legislative Week in Review” on UNC-TV and was a reporter for the N.C. Public Radio Association.

Perdue stretches her lead

Perdue has opened up a wider lead.

According to a recent survey by Democratic firm Public Policy Polling, the Democratic gubernatorial nominee had 46 percent support, Republican McCrory had 37 percent, and Libertarian Mike Munger had 6 percent. Eleven percent were undecided.

Perdue’s support was higher than in previous polls, which pollsters said could be due to former rival Richard Moore’s recent endorsement.

The survey of 823 likely voters was taken July 23 through 27, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points.

SEN. JOHN EDWARDS CAUGHT WITH MISTRESS AND LOVE CHILD!

Vice Presidential candidateSen. John Edwards was caught visiting his mistress and secret love child at 2:40 this morning in a Los Angeles hotelby the NATIONAL ENQUIRER.

The married ex-senator from North Carolina – whose wifeElizabeth continues to battle cancer — met with his mistress, blonde divorcée Rielle Hunter, at the Beverly Hilton on Monday night, July 21 – and the NATIONAL ENQUIRER was there! He didn’t leave until early the next morning.

Rielle had driven to Los Angeles from Santa Barbara with a male friend for the rendezvous with Edwards. The former senator attended a press event Monday afternoon with L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa on the topic of how to combat homelessness.

But a months-long NATIONAL ENQUIRER investigation had yielded information that Rielle and Edwards, 54, had arranged to secretly meet afterward and for the ex-senator to spend some time with both his mistress and the love child who he refuses to publicly acknowledge as his own.

The NATIONAL ENQUIRER broke the story of Edwards’ love child scandal last year, when Rielle was still pregnant and Edwards was still considered a strong candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Both parties denied the NATIONAL ENQUIRER report and a close friend of Edwards’ came forward and said he was the father of Rielle’s baby. But sources told the NATIONAL ENQUIRER a far different story – they revealed that Edwards was engineering a massive cover up of his shocking infidelity.

Sources came forward after that story appeared and told The NATIONAL ENQUIRER that Edwards and Rielle had met secretly several times, so that he could see his baby and continue his relationship with Rielle.

The NATIONAL ENQUIRER learned ahead of time that one such meeting was set for yesterday.

FBI: Pro Soccer Players On Flight Subdue Man Who Took Off Clothes

POSTED: 1:33 pm PDT July 18, 2008
UPDATED: 7:10 pm PDT July 18, 2008

An American Airlines flight from Boston to Los Angeles was diverted to Oklahoma City on Friday after a passenger stripped, put his clothes back on and then tried to open an emergency exit door before being subdued by members of a Major League Soccer team on board, the FBI said.

“He was completely naked. I mean, he’d taken off his clothes, sleeping across the three seats,” said passenger David Pease, who was sitting next to the man.

Members of the New England Revolution professional soccer team helped diffuse the situation.

“Craig Tornberg, our general manager, went over and said, ‘You know, you should go back in there and put your clothes on.’ And then the steward came over and forced him to go back in there to put his clothes back on, which he did,” said Vice President of the New England Revolution Michael Burns.

Pease said that the man was “saying all types of things. Like, ‘Well, I can’t see you.’”

“Then he sat back down in his seat, and then about five or 10 minutes later, when he got up again, and it appeared as though he was going to the bathroom, but that’s when he didn’t and went for the emergency exit door,” Burns said.

That’s when the coach and two staff members of the Revolution subdued the man, KNBC’s Kim Baldonado reported.

“I made some eye contact with Matt Reis, our goalkeeper, and Shalrie Joseph, our defensive midfielder, who are pretty tough guys, and said, ‘Just wait for us, cause we might need you,’” said team general manager Craig Tornberg. “The adrenaline just kind of takes over at the point, and you just kind of pounce. You just react … it’s really anything that anybody would do at that point.”

Tie wraps were placed on the man’s wrists at that point, said FBI spokesman Gary Johnson said

American Flight 725, a Boeing 757, then made a landing in Oklahoma City at 1:35 p.m. CDT and was back in the air an hour later on the way to Los Angeles, said Tim Smith, a spokesman for American Airlines.

The man, whose name was not immediately released, was taken off the flight in Oklahoma City and was undergoing mental evaluation, Johnson said.

Burns added that the man was fairly emotional at times.

“There were times he was crying. There were times he was kind of laughing. …It was very strange,” Burns said.

“He was pretty mild as far as a guy who was first, naked, and the secondly, running for the door to jump out,” Tornberg said. “If he walked by you right now, you probably wouldn’t notice, unless of course he was naked.”

The team was flying to play Chivas USA as part of the SuperLiga Tournament Sunday.

Dwarf Accused Of Pimping Runaway To Face Judge

NEW YORK (CBS) ― A dwarf charged with prostituting an underage runaway will appear in Kings County Supreme Court on Monday.

Jacqueline Green, a.k.a. ‘Shorty,’ due to her 3 foot 9 inch height, is charged with promoting prostitution and child endangerment for allegedly pimping a 15-year-old that ran away from a troubled home.

According to published reports, Green is accused of using her Bedford-Stuyvesant apartment as a sex pad for clients who paid $250 per half-hour for intercourse, and $100 per half-hour of oral sex.

Clients were found using Craigslist.

Green, 26, pleaded not guilty to all charges. The teenage girl was returned to her family. It is not clear how the two met.

Neighbors at Green’s Brooklyn housing project were not surprised by the arrest, where she was described as a “hustler,” and a “player.”

Reginald Forden told the Post “I didn’t know she was a pimp, but I’m not surprised.”

Report: Ohio teacher burned cross on kids’ arms

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (AP) – A public school teacher preached his Christian beliefs despite complaints by other teachers and administrators and used a device to burn the image of a cross on students’ arms, according to a report by independent investigators.

Mount Vernon Middle School teacher John Freshwater also taught creationism in his science class and was insubordinate in failing to remove a Bible and other religious materials from his classroom, the report said.

School board members were scheduled to meet Friday afternoon to discuss the findings by consulting firm H.R. On Call Inc., hired by the district to investigate. The report was released Thursday.

School Superintendent Stephen Short wouldn’t comment on the report before Friday’s meeting, his office said. A message seeking comment was left for Freshwater’s attorney, Roger Weaver.

The report comes one week after a family filed a federal lawsuit in Columbus against Freshwater and the school district, saying Freshwater burned a cross on their child’s arm that remained for three or four weeks.

Freshwater’s friend Dave Daubenmire defended him.

“With the exception of the cross-burning episode … I believe John Freshwater is teaching the values of the parents in the Mount Vernon school district,” he told The Columbus Dispatch in a story published Friday.

Several students interviewed by investigators described Freshwater, who has been employed by the school district for 21 years, as a great guy.

But Lynda Weston, the district’s director of teaching and learning, told investigators that she has dealt with complaints about Freshwater for much of her 11-year term at the district, the report said.

A former superintendent, Jeff Maley, said he tried to find another position for Freshwater but couldn’t because Freshwater was certified only in science, the report said.

Freshwater used a science tool known as a high-frequency generator to burn images of a cross on students’ arms in December, the report said. Freshwater told investigators he simply was trying to demonstrate the device on several students and described the images as an “X,” not a cross. But pictures show the images depict a cross, the report said.

Other findings show that Freshwater taught that carbon dating was unreliable to argue against evolution.

Muslims barred from picture at Obama event

For Obama, the old-fashioned image-making contrasts with his promise to transcend identity politics, and to embrace all elements of America.

Two Muslim women at Barack Obama‘s rally in Detroit on Monday were barred from sitting behind the podium by campaign volunteers seeking to prevent the women’s headscarves from appearing in photographs or on television with the candidate.

The campaign has apologized to the women, both Obama supporters who said they felt betrayed by their treatment at the rally.

“This is of course not the policy of the campaign. It is offensive and counter to Obama’s commitment to bring Americans together and simply not the kind of campaign we run,” said Obama spokesman Bill Burton. “We sincerely apologize for the behavior of these volunteers.”

Building a human backdrop to a political candidate, a set of faces to appear on television and in photographs, is always a delicate exercise in demographics and political correctness. Advance staffers typically pick supporters out of a crowd to reflect the candidate’s message.

When Obama won the North Carolina primary amid questions about his ability to connect with white voters, for instance, he stood in front of a group of middle-aged white women waving small American flags. On the Republican side, a Hispanic New Hampshire Democrat, Roberto Fuentes, told Politico that he was recently asked, and declined, to contribute to the “diversity” of the crowd behind Sen. John McCain at a Nashua event.

But for Obama, the old-fashioned image-making contrasts with his promise to transcend identity politics and to embrace all elements of America. The incidents in Michigan, which has one of the largest Arab and Muslim populations in the country, also raise an aspect of his campaign that sometimes rubs Muslims the wrong way: The candidate has vigorously denied a false, viral rumor that he himself is Muslim. But the denials seem to some at times to imply that there is something wrong with the faith, though Obama occasionally adds that he means no disrespect to Islam.
